Another oddity that has Warhol’s portrait of Paul Anka on its cover, is a various hits album called Golden Top Oldies, released in 1981 by EMI Hong Kong. There are 14 artists (16 songs) on the album – and the cover – but Anka was rewarded most space in the ‘collage’, almost 20% of the cover.
Warhol was not credited for his work though, just the designer of the album cover, a certain Mr. Paul Cheung.
Paul Anka’s song on the record is the title track of his album: The Painter.
These are all the tunes, and it’s quite a strange mix:
SIDE 1
1.SUKYAKI – KYU SAKAMOTO
2.SUMMER RAIN-JOHNNY RIVERS
3.FERRY CROSS THE MERCEY-GERRY & THE PACEMAKERS
4.ANGEL OF THE MORNING-MERRILEE RUSH
5.DONT LET ME BE MISUNDERSTOOD-ANIMALS
6.POOR SIDE OF TOWN-JOHNNY RIVERS
7.MY SENTIMENTAL FRIEND-HERMAN’S HERMITS
8.WORLD WITHOUT LOVE-PETER & GORDON
SIDE 2
1.ILL NEVER DANCE AGAIN-HERMAN’S HERMITS
2.SUMMER HOLIDAY-CLIFF RICHARD
3.THE PAINTER-PAUL ANKA
4.MORE THAN I CAN SAY-BOBBY VEE
5.TO SIR WITH LOVE-LULU
6.JANUARY-PILOT
7.YOU’LL NEVER WALK ALONE-GERRY & THE PACEMAKERs
8.SOMETHINGS BURNING-KENNY ROGERS
Funny cover. Love how one of the guys in the pink blob has one light skinned hand and one dark… or maybe one of them just has an incredibly long arm…
